NASA Makes Dozens of Patents Available in Public Domain to Benefit U.S. Industry

In a press release dated May 6th 2016, NASA has released 56 formerly patent technologies into the public domain, making its government developed technologies freely available for unrestricted commercial use.

These technologies were developed to advance NASA missions but may have non-aerospace applications and be used by commercial space ventures and other companies free of charge, eliminating the time, expense and paperwork often associated with licensing intellectual property.

By making these technologies available in the public domain, we are helping foster a new era of entrepreneurship that will again place America at the forefront of high-tech manufacturing and economic competitiveness,” said Daniel Lockney, NASA’s Technology Transfer program executive.

Few examples of these patents include:

  1. Apparatus And Method For Packaging And Integrating Microphotonic Devices

An apparatus is disclosed that includes a carrier structure and an optical coupling arrangement. The carrier structure is made of a silicon material and allows for the packaging and integrating of microphotonic devices onto a single chip. The optical coupling mechanism enables laser light to…

  1. A Software Platform For Post-Processing Waveform-Based NDE

A computer implemented process for simultaneously measuring the velocity of terahertz electromagnetic radiation in a dielectric material sample without prior knowledge of the thickness of the sample and for measuring the thickness of a material sample using terahertz electromagnetic radiation in.
